Whatever You Do

Colossians 3:12-17

Put on then, as God’s chosen ones, holy and beloved, compassionate hearts, kindness, humility, meekness, and patience, bearing with one another and, if one has a complaint against another, forgiving each other; as the Lord has forgiven you, so you also must forgive. And above all these put on love, which binds everything together in perfect harmony. And let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, to which indeed you were called in one body. And be thankful. Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God. And whatever you do, in word or deed, do everything in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through him.
YOLO: You Only Live Once, was a phase that I heard a lot in high school. “Yo, should I jump off the top of the school?- YOLO, man.” “Dude lets drag race down the highway-okay, YOLO.” It was a phrase that as a senior in high school my friends used it when going to parties, living life on the edge, or to not care about tomorrow because you only have one today. Even I lived a little bit in the YOLO life,  because everyone was saying, “You only live once.” Now I look back at those people and some of them are still living that life of do whatever you can while you are young.

Now as a Christian, I know that I am not guaranteed tomorrow and in this body that I am now in, I only get one shot with it. I do not want to live life like there is no tomorrow, but I want to live life for tomorrow. For what comes after.

Right now I am 24, am married, in a master’s program and in student ministry. But this is only a season as the years go by I will not have the same reach to some people at 24 as I may at 35. I’m in the season of not having kids but that could change at anytime. The students that are in the ministry here are only here for a little bit of time compared to their life. So right now in this season, how can I live it for today to impact those around me? Well that is to do everything thing I do in the name of Jesus Christ.

The world is crazy right now, with Covid, the election, injustice in our nation, and the re-opening of schools. This is a crazy season of life that we are living in. But this is just a season. Not to say that any of this will go away, but as Christians we may never have a place to speak into these issues like we do now.

As Christians, we need to stand up for the gospel and have conversations because we only get one shot. If you are a parent to a 4th grader, they are only in this season once. How can you better show them the gospel to impact their life and the kingdom? Maybe you are in college or the workforce and do not know where to go or what to do with you life? But all that matters is that you are trusting in the Spirit to do everything in the name of Jesus Christ for the betterment of the Kingdom. It’s is our job in whatever season we are in, whether it is sunny or dark and cold to live now here on earth as it already is in heaven. Doing everything in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, because we only get one life for all of eternity.

Reflect

  • What season of life do you feel like you are in?
  • What could you do today to further the Kingdom of God?

Pray

Father, help us in whatever season we are in right now, to look for you. Give us your strength to live a life worthy of your name. Help us to love those around us even if they do not agree with us. And in everything we do, allow it to be used for the betterment of the Gospel. Amen.
