GATHERING

[God calls his people to worship him and prepares our hearts to hear his Word.]

Call to Worship  |  From Psalm 118

Oh give thanks to the Lord, for he is good;
for his steadfast love endures forever!

Out of my distress I called on the Lord;
the Lord answered me and set me free.
The Lord is on my side; I will not fear.
What can man do to me?
The Lord is on my side as my helper;
I shall look in triumph on those who hate me.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in man.
It is better to take refuge in the Lord
    than to trust in princes.

Open to me the gates of righteousness,
that I may enter through them
and give thanks to the Lord.
This is the gate of the Lord;
the righteous shall enter through it.
I thank you that you have answered me
    and have become my salvation.

The stone that the builders rejected
    has become the cornerstone.
This is the Lord's doing;
it is marvelous in our eyes.
This is the day that the Lord has made;
let us rejoice and be glad in it.

Save us, we pray, O Lord!
O Lord, we pray, give us success!

Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord!
We bless you from the house of the Lord.
The Lord is God,
and he has made his light to shine upon us.

Leader: The Word of the Lord.
People: Thanks be to God.

Prayer

Father, we are reminded of the
Israelites in exile, separated from your people,
unable to worship you together.
But we trust, that even in
what feels like a foreign land,
you are sovereign yet.

Though it may seem for our harm,
use for good the sorrow of isolation
that we may grow in longing for
     the gathering of your people,
     the fellowship of the body,
     the communion of the saints.

Though our voices may be scattered
among our separate homes,
may they be as little lights, driving
back the darkness of these days.
Though they may lack the
harmony of singing together,
may they rise to you all the same,
     and in rising, converge
     across space and time,

to join together and with the voices
of heaven, as a sign of our hope in
the day when we will sing together
again, and of our greater hope
in the day when we will sing together
around your throne.

Amen.

Sing: Lord From Sorrows Deep I Call

Lord from sorrows deep I call
When my hope is shaken
Torn and ruined from the fall
Hear my desperation
For so long I’ve pled and prayed
God come to my rescue
Even so the thorn remains
Still my heart will praise You

Storms within my troubled soul
Questions without answers
On my faith these billows roll
God be now my shelter
Why are you cast down my soul
Hope in Him who saves you
When the fires have all grown cold
Cause this heart to praise You

Oh my soul put your hope in God
My help my rock I will praise Him
Sing oh sing through the raging storm
You're still my God my salvation

Should my life be torn from me
Every worldly pleasure
When all I possess is grief
God be then my treasure
Be my vision in the night
Be my hope and refuge
'Til my faith is turned to sight
Lord my heart will praise You

Sing: King of My Heart

Let the King of my heart
Be the mountain where I run
The fountain I drink from
Oh He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the shadow where I hide
The ransom for my life
Oh He is my song

You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
You are good good oh
Let the King of my heart
Be the wind inside my sails
The anchor in the waves
Oh He is my song
Let the King of my heart
Be the fire inside my veins
The echo of my days
Oh He is my song

You're never gonna let
Never gonna let me down
You're never gonna let
Never gonna let me down

WORD

[God speaks to his people through the Scriptures in the power of the Holy Spirit.]

Prayer For Illumination

Merciful God,
as we enter Holy week, turn our hearts again to Jerusalem,
and to the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ.
Stir up within us the gift of faith that we may not only praise him with our lips,
but may follow him in the way of the cross.
Amen.

Scripture Reading  |  Luke  19:28-44

[Read the text together and then play the teaching video.]

Sing: King of Kings

In the darkness we were waiting
Without hope without light
Till from Heaven You came running
There was mercy in Your eyes
To fulfill the law and prophets
To a virgin came the Word
From a throne of endless glory
To a cradle in the dirt

Praise the Father Praise the Son
Praise the Spirit three in one
God of Glory Majesty
Praise forever to the King of Kings

To reveal the kingdom coming
And to reconcile the lost
To redeem the whole creation
You did not despise the cross
For even in Your suffering
You saw to the other side
Knowing this was our salvation
Jesus for our sake You died

And the morning that You rose
All of heaven held its breath
Till that stone was moved for good
For the Lamb had conquered death
And the dead rose from their tombs
And the angels stood in awe
For the souls of all who'd come
To the Father are restored

And the Church of Christ was born
Then the Spirit lit the flame
Now this Gospel truth of old
Shall not kneel shall not faint
By His blood and in His Name
In His freedom I am free
For the love of Jesus Christ
Who has resurrected me

TABLE

[God unites his people to himself as we respond to his Word.]

Prayers of the People

Gracious Father, every good and perfect gift is from you.
May we hold fast to your goodness
with joy and thanksgiving
even amidst these days of uncertainty.

[Take a moment to thank God for ways he has blessed you in the last week.]

Jesus Christ, you traveled through towns and villages “curing every disease and illness.”
At your command, the sick were made well.
Come to our aid now,
in the midst of the global spread of the coronavirus,
that we may experience your healing love.

[Pray for healing for those who are sick]
[Pray for comfort for those who are afraid.]
[Pray for provision for doctors, nurses, and healthcare workers.]
[Pray for others whom God has laid on your heart.]

We know you are the Prince of peace, Lord of lords, the King of kings.
We praise you for your goodness and your mercy,
And we ask this all in the name of Jesus, our Lord.
Amen.

Confession and Assurance

Let us confess our sins to God.

[Silence may be kept.]

Most merciful God,
we confess that we have sinned against you
in thought, word, and deed,
by what we have done,
and by what we have left undone.
We have not loved you with our whole heart;
we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves.
We are truly sorry and we humbly repent.
For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us and forgive us;
that we may delight in your will,
and walk in your ways,
to the glory of your Name.
Amen.

As you have promised us in your Word so we believe, and find assurance:
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins
and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
[1 John 1:9]

Let us pray as our Savior has taught us.

Our Father in heaven, hallowed be your name,
your kingdom come, your will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us today our daily bread.
Forgive us our sins
as we forgive those who sin against us
And lead us not into temptation
but deliver us from evil.
For yours is the kingdom,
and the power and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen.

Communion

What I received from the Lord is what I deliver to, that the Lord Jesus Christ, on the very night when he was betrayed, took the bread, blessed it, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take and eat. This is my body, broken for you. Do this in remembrance of me.” And in the same way after supper, he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave it to the disciples, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” For whenever you eat this bread, and whenever you drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes again. These are the gifts of God for the people of God. Taste and see the goodness of the Lord in the gift of his Son.

[Those who are baptized may share in the bread and the cup.]

Sing: Shout Hosanna

To the King of glory and light all praises
To the only Giver of life our Maker
The gates are open wide we worship You

Come see what love has done amazing
He bought us with His blood our Savior
The cross has overcome we worship You

Shout hosanna Jesus He saves
Shout hosanna He rose from the grave
Come and lift Him up hosanna

Now let the lost be found forgiven
Death could not hold Him down He's risen
So let the saints cry out we worship You

The same power that rolled the stone away
The same power alive in us today
King Jesus we call upon Your name no other name

SENDING

[God sends his people out to love and serve him in the world.]

Closing Prayer

Lord, teach us to love: To love the Lord our God
     With all our heart,
     with all our soul,
     and with all our mind.
To love our neighbor as ourselves.
Lord, teach us to love like Jesus.

Benediction

As you go to love and serve the Lord,
may the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding,
guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.
Amen.
